How to make a simple shorts from an old casual Polo

Hi mommies! I'm thinking if some of you can relate to this post. Is anyone reading this blog has the same problem as mine? I have this huge stock of old casual polo and shirts of my husband.

These clothes are the ones which are being left by the trend. The lousy and extra large polo and shirts which once became a trend but now out of the flow.

I've discovered a solution to this not so heavy but  serious problem, and this is by recycling these old polo to kiddie shorts.

Because I have three kids and all of them love wearing  shorts while at home. I got two solutions in one action, I can save space from my closet and at the same time, I could make shorts for my kids out of it.

Here's my example of cutting an old casual polo to create a simple kiddie shorts.
recycle old casual polo to shorts for kids <img src="shorts.gif" alt="How to cut an old polo to make a kiddie shorts " />
This is my husband's large polo. Cutting is very easy since I'm making a simple design of shorts. Just fold the polo in the middle then cut as directed on the image. Cutting allowance should be 5 inches from the actual size. Let's say that your kid has 20 waist line and 15 legs size, you have to cut 25 waist line and 20 leg size. You should follow the same allowance when you measure the waist to the upper leg. Make sure you make the cutting right by flatting the polo, matching the ends so you'll have a perfect cut of your shorts.

The image below will show you the cutting steps using a virgin fabric.
procedure in cutting simple designed shorts
This is how you cut a fabric to make a simple design of shorts.

  • Step 1: Get two square cut of fabrics according to your desired size
  • Step 2: Fold each fabric in the middle.
  • Step 3: Cut as directed n the picture
  • Step 4: Check if you cut the same size f both half
  • Step 5: Cut two pieces of rectangle shape of small fabric about 6 inches wide and 5 inches tall, this will be used as pockets. Cut another small length of fabric about 2 inches tall and 5 inches wide, this will be the edging of the pockets. The pocket is an inch wider because you will fold it in the middle for a little touch art.

Now we're ready for sewing procedure.
<img src="shorts.gif" alt="procedure in making kiddie shorts" />

1. fold the bottom leg part 2x,about an inch wide
2. Connect and sew to close the leg part. Do the steps 1-2 to the other half.
3. Double stitch to avoid ripping
4. This is how it looks like
5. Now connect two halves
6. Again, double stitch to avoid ripping
7. Fold the waist 2x about 3/4 inch wide, this is where the garter should be inserted
8. Now, insert the garter, then lock.
9.Your finished product

Let's see how it looks like when my daughter wears it. The most important thing to consider in making shorts is that it should be comfortable to wear, also this rainy season, choose a fabric which is easy to dry.

Another Craft Business Ideas for Moms

Aside from blogging,I also have other sources of income. Since I can't depend on the earnings of my blogs from advertisers, I still want more. Blogging is not a full time task, I just need an hour a day to maintain it, so I still have a lot of free time left in  a day and none of these would be wasted because I  my have my sewing machine.

I am not a sewer by profession, I don't even have formal training in sewing. But I love sewing so much, the desire to fabricate clothes comes from the heart. They say it's given and comes out naturally as a talent. Before it was just a hobby, I used to make dresses for my girls as well as shorts and skirts. Then after realizing it, I'm beginning to deeply learn more about sewing, until I found my self enjoying, making different fabric products and selling them online. This is why knowledge about craftng is very important, it serves as a tool to use in your everyday life and if you prefer to enter a craft business.

At first,I just posted my finished product photos of my kid's dresses at sulit.com, now olx.com. Then inquiries came flowing into my inbox. I learned to deal online, got familiarized with the flow of online selling. Although not all inquiries are from serious clients, most of them are spam but I still had successful deals online. Selling online is one of my sources of extra income, I just had to monitor my email inbox to respond to inquiries regularly and quickly
<img src="fabrics.gif" alt=" business online selling" />
I'm just  lucky to have aspiring models in the house so I saved a lot in paying models to wear my finished products. The dresses are my own designs, I made them for my two little girls. The pajamas are customer's order,I just posted them here to show some supporting images for this post. I even made that pot holder and sale it for 20php/pc. The best seller among my products is the bed sheet and pillow cases set. Why? because I sell the most affordable bed sheet set in town plus the wide range of fabrics choices.

Shorts are very easy to make. I just prepared a carton pattern so I would have a standard size for all ages. What's so good about my hobby is I can save a lot of money for my kid's dress and shorts, I saved for my bed sheets and rags and at the same time I can do some business out of it.

fabrics(tela) for sale
Aside from selling finished products, I also sell plain, virgin fabrics. Most of my customers are tailors, sewers and shops. I get whole sale products from a big fabric store near by. I didn't have to stock fabrics, all i have to do is to have a file of sample photos of fabrics in my computer so if anyone asks for a sample, I could immediately email them some. The most important thing you have to do in selling products online is that you have to respond to inquiries immediately they'll stay and wait until you close and finish the deal.

dig foldable shopping bag
Here at Crafty Mom Ideas, we give attention in making DIY products to help all interested mothers out there to learn how to make basic products we need in our house holds. This post is very special because it concerns our environment and how to protect it.
I'm so glad that authorities in most provinces and cities are now strictly implementing the "no plastic bags" policy in all merchants. It should have done a long time ago, maybe it did not become this worst. We all knew that plastic bags are non biodegradable, it can be very harmful to our environment. It takes 15 years or more before these plastic bags are totally decomposed. The tendency is to accumulate these wastes in our environment. It's very possible that we can create another mountain, a mountain of garbage! I'm inspired to make this article, why? Because this is another helpful DIY project. It's something we should learn to. I know some of you see things like what I do.I hate paper bags!
